I have FSH Muscular Dystrophy (FSHMD), an incurable, untreatable, muscle-wasting disorder. When I was diagnosed doctors advised me to "take it easy" and “not overdo it.”
I respected the doctors’ advice but I decided to define his own limits. Despite continuing to loose muscle, eventually loosing the ability to do a pushup, a sit up, or even raise my arms over my head, I spent the next decade competing successfully in national and international level triathlons while also pursing my passion for water-sports like surfing, bodysurfing, paddleboarding, kiteboarding, free-diving, and sailing.
If you have a condition like FSHMD, or any disability for that matter, I hope you find hope and inspiration in knowing you are not alone. In knowing that an increasing number of doctors are now advising their patients with conditions like FSHMD that it is ok, even preferable, to remain active. I invite you to join us!
This website is intended to serve as a beacon of hope for people, with and without disabilities, who want to discover their own limits rather than have them imposed by others. It is intended to be a reminder that even though you can’t always choose what challenges you will face in life, you can choose how you will respond.
Life is not a dress rehearsal...
